The steps below are general cleansing guidance. Use the directions on your own tub for the balm's specific application method, because a product name is not an instruction manual.1
How to apply and rinse it
- 1Start with the amount and skin condition specified on your Dr G tub. Do not substitute a generic cleanser's wet skin instructions for the balm's own directions.
- 2Spread the cleanser gently with your fingertips. Use light circular movements rather than scrubbing or working at the skin with a cloth.
- 3Follow the tub's instructions for adding water, then rinse the cleanser off completely with lukewarm water.
- 4Gently pat your face dry with a clean towel rather than rubbing.
Cleansing removes makeup, sunscreen, dirt and excess oil, a fairly full job description without adding miracles. Water alone is not enough to remove all oily dirt: cleansing agents help loosen it from the skin so it can wash away. Thorough rinsing is part of the process, not an optional finish.3
When should you use it?
Before bed is the time to remove makeup and the dirt that has collected during the day. General face washing guidance also includes cleansing when you wake up and after sweating. That schedule is for washing your face, not a requirement to use this particular balm at every wash. Follow the Dr G directions for its place in your routine.1
Do you need another cleanser afterwards?
For acne prone skin, use an oil free makeup remover, then wash with a gentle cleanser. Look for products labelled oil free, noncomedogenic or won't clog pores rather than assuming a balm suits acne prone skin. Remove eye makeup before bed too, but follow the balm's label for whether it can be used around the eyes.2
What if your skin stings or feels dry?
Cleansers can cause irritation, and washing too much can leave skin excessively dry. Sensitive skin can sting during or just after cleansing. Stop using a cleanser that causes redness, itching or swelling rather than trying to scrub through the reaction. If you use acne treatments that stay on the skin, be cautious about adding an acne treatment cleanser: the combination can cause excessive dryness and irritation.3
If breakouts persist and you cannot identify the product responsible, a dermatologist can help. See a doctor for deep, painful spots, scarring, or skin that becomes hot, swollen and red.24
