What does noncomedogenic actually mean?
Noncomedogenic means designed not to clog pores. Comedones are pores plugged with sebum, your skin's natural oil, and dead skin cells; they include blackheads and whiteheads. Products carrying a noncomedogenic label are among those least likely to cause acne, rather than a promise of zero breakouts. For oily skin or skin prone to acne, look for that wording on sunscreen and the other products in your routine.456
If your tube says Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics, Beauty of Joseon has renamed the original Rice + Niacinamide without changing its formula, ingredients or size. Both names can appear on authorized stock during the packaging change, so the sunscreen has changed its introduction rather than its contents.1
Which version should you choose?
| Feature | Relief Sun Rice + Niacinamide | Relief Sun Aqua Fresh Rice + B5 |
|---|---|---|
| Protection | SPF50+ PA++++ | SPF50+ PA++++ |
| Texture and finish | Creamy, lightweight and dewy | Lighter fluid with a subtle natural glow |
| Featured ingredients | Rice extract and niacinamide | Rice seed water and panthenol, vitamin B5 |
| Pore clogging claim | Labeled noncomedogenic | Noncomedogenic and suitable for skin prone to acne in a two week study of 21 people |
| Canadian regular price | $29 for 50 mL | $29 for 50 mL |
Choose the original if you want a moisturizing sunscreen, especially for dry or normal skin. Choose Aqua Fresh if your skin is oily or combination, or the original feels too rich. Aqua Fresh is designed for a lighter feel, so choosing between them is partly a texture decision rather than a contest to see which tube says rice more convincingly.12
Expect hydration and sun protection, not an acne treatment. The original includes niacinamide to support the moisture barrier and soothe skin; Aqua Fresh uses panthenol for moisturizing and soothing. Existing blackheads and whiteheads need separate acne care. With appropriate care and treatment, improvement can start in eight to 12 weeks, while clearing comedonal acne can take months.234
How should you apply it?
- 1Decide whether you need moisturizer underneath. For the original Relief Sun, Beauty of Joseon advises moisturizer for dry, dehydrated or normal skin. Combination skin can add it if needed; oily skin can skip the extra moisturizer.
- 2Apply sunscreen as the last step of your morning skincare routine, before going outside. Spread it generously and evenly over skin exposed to the sun.
- 3Reapply at least every two hours. Both products give this interval in their main application directions.
- 4Use a water resistant sunscreen for swimming or sweating. Continue using protective clothing, a hat and sunglasses rather than relying on sunscreen alone.
What if you have sensitive skin or develop breakouts?
Both formulas are labeled fragrance free and have sensitive skin testing. If sunscreen stings or burns, switch to a fragrance free sunscreen whose only sunscreen filters are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. During pregnancy, Beauty of Joseon advises checking with your doctor before introducing either sunscreen because skin can become more sensitive.236
A breakout after starting sunscreen does not automatically identify sunscreen as the cause: hormones, stress, other skincare products and some medicines can also contribute. Review the rest of your routine for noncomedogenic labeling. If acne persists despite treatment, see a dermatologist. If you suspect a prescribed medicine is contributing, continue taking it and speak with the doctor who prescribed it.5
