How often should you exfoliate?
For glycolic acid, start once or twice a week at night. Increase frequency only if your skin tolerates it and the product directions allow it. Glycolic acid is a strong exfoliant, so daily use is not a sensible starting point. For aging skin, gentle exfoliation once or twice a week can help skin look more refreshed; using too much or applying it more often than directed can leave skin raw and irritated.23
Salicylic acid is a different case: many people tolerate it up to twice daily. It helps unclog pores and is useful for blackheads and whiteheads. Treat that as general ingredient guidance, not permission to use every salicylic acid formula twice a day. Follow your product's directions and stop if it irritates your skin.234
What does too much exfoliation do?
Overusing exfoliants can damage the skin barrier, the protective outer layer of your skin. Skin can become raw and irritated, and you can develop allergic reactions to products that previously caused no problems. Stop the exfoliant if irritation develops rather than continuing to chase smoother skin. Make an appointment with a dermatologist if you develop skin irritation or contact dermatitis, an inflammatory skin reaction.45
Who should be more careful?
Dry, sensitive or acne prone skin can find mechanical exfoliation too irritating. Mechanical exfoliation means scrubs, brushes and other tools that physically remove dead cells; chemical exfoliation uses ingredients that dissolve them. A mild chemical exfoliant can be a better choice. Avoid aggressive exfoliation if you have darker skin or develop dark spots after skin injuries, because it can increase pigmentation. Prescription retinoids, retinol and benzoyl peroxide can also make skin more sensitive or cause peeling; adding exfoliation can worsen dryness or breakouts.1
How to exfoliate without overdoing it
Using fewer products keeps a routine simpler, even if it gives the bathroom shelf less of a career.5
- 1Check the exfoliant's directions and your existing products before adding it. Introduce fewer new products at a time so the routine stays manageable.
- 2Apply gently. For a rinse off scrub or chemical exfoliator, use small circular motions for about 30 seconds, then rinse with lukewarm water. Follow the label for products designed to stay on.
- 3Apply moisturizer immediately afterward. Exfoliation can dry the skin.
- 4Use sunscreen as the final skincare step in the morning. Facial acids can increase susceptibility to sun damage; choose SPF 30 or higher.
- 5Check how your skin responds before the next application. Never exfoliate sunburned skin or areas with open cuts or wounds.
