Is oily skin good or bad?
Your skin makes sebum to reduce water loss and help protect against bacteria and fungi, not to sabotage your bathroom lighting. Oil glands also help maintain the skin's protective barrier. The useful goal is to manage excess oil and any breakouts, rather than remove every trace of oil.24
The downside is that excess oil and dead skin cells can block hair follicles, the openings where hairs grow. Bacteria can then grow inside and cause inflammation and pus. Shine or larger looking pores alone are different from painful spots, deep lumps or scarring, which need attention as acne rather than just oiliness.3
Why is your skin oily?
Genes and hormones play a key role in oil production, so a shiny finish is not a hygiene report. Diet probably has little influence on whether your skin is oily. Oil production can increase around puberty and in warm, humid weather, and it generally declines with age. Skin type can also change during pregnancy, breastfeeding or with certain medications.1245
Is your whole face oily?
Notice how your skin feels about 30 minutes after washing and drying it. An oily feel suggests oily skin; oily areas alongside dry patches suggest combination skin. A greasy forehead, nose and chin with dry cheeks does not need the same treatment everywhere. Sensitive skin can also be oily: burning, itching or redness are reasons to choose gentler products, not stronger oil control.1
How should you care for oily skin?
- 1Cleanse with warm water and a gentle cleanser. If you have acne, wash morning and evening. Wash after exercise, too, and avoid scrubbing, which can irritate skin and worsen acne.
- 2Apply moisturizer after washing, while some water remains on your skin. For acne prone skin, look for oil free or noncomedogenic products, meaning products designed not to clog pores. These are less likely to cause acne, rather than a promise of no breakouts.
- 3Apply sunscreen during the day. Sun protection remains part of the routine regardless of how much oil your skin produces.
If you also have clogged pores or spots, a pharmacist can advise on salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Both can dry and irritate skin, so daily moisturizer helps you tolerate treatment. Oily skin that is also sensitive needs extra care with these ingredients. Dryness from a topical retinoid does not necessarily mean less oil is being produced.1236
For acne, expect improvement over weeks rather than after one wash. People following a combined acne medication, cleanser and moisturizer plan often see fewer spots within 4 to 8 weeks. That timing is for acne improvement, not a deadline for oily skin to become a different skin type.6
Do you need an oil control mask?
A facial mask can supplement your routine, but it cannot replace acne treatment, despite occupying most of your face. Clay can absorb oil, and niacinamide can help reduce shine. Follow the label's timing and avoid duplicating exfoliating ingredients already in your routine. Wash a mask off immediately if it causes itching, burning or stinging.7
When should you get medical help?
See a doctor if spots are deep, painful, numerous, causing scars or not improving with treatment. Also get help for hot, swollen, red skin or acne that affects your mental health. A dermatologist can help if you cannot work out your skin type or choose products that your skin tolerates.13
