What does skin oil actually do?
Sebum is the oily substance made by sebaceous glands, the tiny oil glands in your skin. Sebum forms a protective coating that helps skin retain moisture and protects against friction and infection by bacteria and fungi. Natural oil has an actual job, despite the skincare aisle treating shine like a disciplinary matter.23
Producing more oil does not automatically mean healthier skin. Too little sebum can leave skin feeling tight or scaly; too much can collect in pores and contribute to pimples. Acne is a skin condition, rather than just another word for shine. Care should address clogged pores or irritation, not simply remove every trace of oil.34
Why is your skin oily?
Genetics, hormones, stress and weather affect oil production. Skin naturally becomes oilier during the teenage years, and warm, humid conditions can increase oiliness. Sebum production generally declines with age, particularly after menopause. Hormonal changes during pregnancy or breastfeeding can also change your skin type. Your skin type is not a lifetime contract, however permanent the bathroom shelf looks.1245
If your forehead, nose and chin are oily but your cheeks feel dry, you have combination skin rather than uniformly oily skin. Different areas can need different care. Sensitivity is a separate issue: oily skin can also be sensitive. Redness, itching, burning or stinging deserve attention rather than a stronger oil control product.4
How should you care for healthy oily skin?
- 1Wash gently morning and evening, and after exercise. Use a mild cleanser rather than scrubbing with a washcloth or rough exfoliant. Harsh cleansing and irritation can increase oil production.
- 2Apply moisturizer after cleansing. Moisturize morning and night, choosing products labeled oil free and noncomedogenic, meaning designed not to clog pores. Oily skin still needs moisture.
- 3Apply sunscreen during the day. Choose broad spectrum protection, which covers UVA and UVB rays, water resistance and SPF 30 or higher. Also seek shade and wear clothing that protects against the sun.
Sun protection helps prevent sunburn, early skin aging and skin cancer. For darker skin tones, tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide also helps protect against dark spots.5
Do you need oil control treatments?
For shine right now, gently press an oil absorbing sheet onto oily areas. Do not rub: rubbing spreads oil and can irritate skin. Blotting removes surface oil without changing your inherited skin type, so the sheet is doing a small job rather than negotiating with your DNA.1
If clogged pores or pimples are the problem, salicylic acid products can help unclog pores. Sensitive skin needs more caution because salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide can cause irritation. Avoid choosing a stronger product simply because your face looks shiny.4
A clay mask can absorb oil, but masks do not replace daily skincare or acne treatment. Test a new mask on a small area first and follow its label. Avoid an exfoliating mask if your routine already includes similar acids or retinol. Wash the mask off immediately if it causes itching, burning or stinging.6
When should you see a dermatologist?
Routine changes take time. If oiliness bothers you and has not improved after a month or two of home care, a dermatologist can help choose products or discuss prescription options. Seek help if your skin feels worse after a mask, or if persistent acne needs treatment rather than more attempts to remove shine.146
