What is the difference between squalane and squalene?

Squalene, with an "e", occurs naturally in sebum, the oil your skin produces. It also occurs in plants and animals. Converting squalene into squalane, with an "a", makes it more stable for skincare. Choose a product identified as plant derived if you want a plant source.12

What does squalane do for your skin?

Squalane sits on the skin's surface and helps reduce moisture loss. Keeping water in the skin is one way moisturizers improve hydration. Skin's outermost layer provides this moisture barrier; when it dries out, skin can become rough, scaly and less flexible. Think of squalane primarily as moisture support, rather than a replacement for treatment of acne or eczema.1234

Should you choose an oil or a moisturizer?

FormatWhen it makes sense
Squalane oilA lightweight option if you dislike thick creams or still feel dry after moisturizer.
Moisturizer containing squalaneA way to include squalane within your moisturizing step.
Cream or ointmentThe preferred format for very dry skin or eczema; these provide more moisture than lotions.

A moisturizer containing squalane can serve as your moisturizing step, without giving facial oil its own department in the routine. For dry or sensitive skin, choose fragrance free products. "Unscented" is not the same: a product can contain chemicals that hide other ingredients' smells and irritate skin.15

How do you apply squalane?

  1. 1Wash gently. For dry skin, avoid harsh cleansers and thick lather.
  2. 2Apply any lighter serum or toner before squalane oil.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer while skin is still damp after washing. If using squalane oil, layer it after lighter products to help retain moisture.
  4. 4For daytime sun protection, use a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
15

Squalane can be part of daytime moisturizing. For dry skin, apply moisturizer after washing and whenever skin feels dry, including several times a day if needed. These are general moisturizing habits, not a special squalane dosing schedule. A separate oil is optional if your moisturizer already meets your needs, even when the bottle looks very committed to being purchased.15

Can oily or sensitive skin use squalane?

Squalane is considered noncomedogenic, meaning it is not expected to clog pores. An oil blend still needs consideration: other oils can contribute to blocked pores, and fragrances, preservatives or dyes can trigger reactions. The whole formula matters, not just the ingredient advertised on the bottle.1

If you have eczema, use a fragrance free cream or ointment after bathing and when skin feels dry. Test a new skincare product on a patch about the size of a quarter inside your arm every day for 7 to 10 days before wider use. If the area stays clear, you can start using the product. Ingredients besides fragrance can also cause eczema to flare.4

Can you use squalane with retinol?

Squalane and retinol can be used together, but squalane itself does not contain retinol. If retinol is making skin dry, adding oil is not the only adjustment to consider: a milder retinol can be appropriate. For excessively dry skin, avoid irritating products and follow any existing dermatology treatment plan.15

What should you expect, and when should you get help?

Mild dry skin can improve within a few days of moisturizing treatment. That is a general dry skin timeframe, not a specific deadline for squalane. Regular moisturizing helps minimize relapses, while more severe dryness can need medical treatment. Judge progress by whether roughness, scaling and discomfort are improving, rather than expecting an oil to resolve every cause of dryness.3

If a new product causes burning, stinging or irritation, stop using it and tell your dermatologist. Seek care if dryness persists despite gentle cleansing and regular moisturizing. Persistent dryness can have an underlying cause that needs treatment. For eczema, tell your dermatologist which skincare changes help and which do not so your treatment plan can be adjusted.45
