What can trigger chest breakouts?
- Hormone changes during puberty, periods, pregnancy and menopause can contribute to acne.
- Certain medicines and skin or hair products that make skin greasy can contribute.
- Sports equipment can cause acne mechanica, a type of acne associated with equipment.
- Tight clothing, rubbing and shaving can damage hair follicles and cause folliculitis, an inflammation of the follicles that can look like acne.
Is chest acne caused by dirt, food or stress?
Blackheads and pimples are not caused by dirt, so acne is not a cleanliness report. Stress does not cause acne, but it can make existing acne worse. Chocolate and greasy foods are often blamed, yet there is little evidence that food has much effect on acne in most people. Some foods can worsen acne, but a chest breakout alone is not a reason to assume that your last meal caused it.24
Could the bumps be folliculitis instead?
Not every chest breakout is acne. Bacterial folliculitis and Malassezia folliculitis are separate follicular conditions. Bacterial folliculitis can produce pus filled bumps that itch or feel mildly sore. A sudden breakout after shaving, rubbing or wearing tight clothing raises the possibility of folliculitis, rather than confirming acne. Hot, damp skin is easier to damage through friction. Breakouts beneath a swimsuit about 12 to 48 hours after a hot tub are another clue. A dermatologist can distinguish folliculitis from acne; bacterial swabs can help confirm a bacterial infection.356
What should you change first?
- Wash acne affected skin twice daily with a gentle cleanser. Do not scrub.
- Choose skincare labelled noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing, especially during exercise or sweating.
- Ask a pharmacist about salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide for acne.
- Do not pick or squeeze spots because this can cause scars.
If tight workout clothing is contributing to folliculitis, change out of it immediately after exercise and shower. If shaving, plucking or waxing caused folliculitis, stop that activity for 30 days. Warm compresses can relieve discomfort: apply one for 15 to 20 minutes at least 3 to 4 times daily. Folliculitis often clears on its own when the trigger stops and the immune system is healthy, although some people need medication. Avoid poorly maintained hot tubs, and wash and fully dry swimwear between uses to reduce exposure to bacteria.3
What causes chest acne in men?
Men can develop the same blocked follicles that cause acne in anyone. Acne is common in teenagers and young adults. Shaving or waxing the chest also creates a separate possibility: bacterial folliculitis, which affects adolescents and young adult males particularly often. Whether bumps appeared after hair removal is a useful detail to tell a clinician.46
What causes acne on the back and chest?
Both are common sites for pimples caused by clogged hair follicles, which makes 'body acne' a location label rather than a different species. For sudden breakouts in both areas, clothing friction and folliculitis are also worth considering.34
What causes acne on the face, back and chest?
Acne commonly affects all three areas. Having pimples across these sites fits acne's usual distribution; it does not identify one particular trigger. Hormone changes can contribute, and stress can worsen existing acne.4
When should you see a doctor?
See a doctor if treatment is not helping, you have lots of spots, or lumps are deep, painful or leaving scars. Get medical help for hot, swollen and red skin, which can signal infection; redness can be harder to see on brown and black skin. Acne affecting your mental health is also a reason to seek help.7
