What does dimethicone actually do?

Dimethicone acts as an emollient, meaning it softens and smooths the outer layer of skin. It fills gaps between surface skin cells and leaves a thin film. That film is water repellent but allows water vapor through, so think of it as a protective surface layer rather than a waterproof seal. Dimethicone is colorless and odorless, and its physical properties vary with the size of its molecules.1

Body lotions usually combine ingredients with different jobs. Humectants, such as glycerin, attract and retain water in the outer skin layer; emollients soften it; occlusive ingredients form a surface barrier. Dimethicone's name on the ingredient list describes one part of the formula, not everything the lotion does.2

Who is a dimethicone lotion useful for?

A lotion is a useful option for mild body dryness or hairy areas where a heavier product is less convenient. Thick, very dry or scaly areas often need a more protective ointment. Pick a texture you are willing to use regularly, rather than one that wins an imaginary award for being the greasiest. Extra anti ageing claims can be misleading, even when the bottle has clearly rehearsed its sales pitch.2

How should you use the lotion?

  1. 1Apply body lotion immediately after bathing to help retain water already in the skin.
  2. 2Reapply according to dryness. Slightly dry skin can need only a light moisturizer at night; drier skin needs more frequent application.
  3. 3Use it regularly. Moisturizer benefits are greatest during the first six hours after application, and two to three applications a day can be needed.

What if your skin is sensitive?

Stop using a lotion if an itchy, inflamed rash develops. Fragrances and preservatives can cause contact allergy, and suspected allergy can be investigated with patch testing. Occlusive moisturizers can also aggravate acne or inflamed hair follicles.2

For dyshidrotic eczema, which affects the hands or feet, choose a fragrance free cream or ointment rather than lotion. A dermatologist can recommend a dimethicone barrier repair cream to protect against irritation while allowing skin to breathe. Apply moisturizer after washing and whenever skin feels dry. See a dermatologist if you cannot identify what is irritating your skin.3
