How does dimethicone help skin?
Dimethicone works as an occlusive, an ingredient that forms a surface barrier to slow water evaporation. It also works as an emollient, meaning it smooths rough areas. Those are different jobs: keeping water in helps with dryness, while smoothing the surface improves how skin feels. Dimethicone contributes to the glide of a product during application, too.13
Humectants such as glycerin attract and hold water in the outer skin layer. Dimethicone helps retain that moisture, which is why a moisturizer can combine both types of ingredient. Dry skin needs water, not simply more oil. Some products labeled "oil free" use dimethicone to limit water loss instead of mineral or vegetable oils.34
Which products should you look for?
Dimethicone appears in creams, lotions, ointments, serums, sunscreens and lip balms, so it is not a separate routine step. For dry skin, choose a fragrance free cream or ointment rather than a lotion; creams and ointments provide more moisture. Dimethicone can be used on the face and body, including rough areas such as elbows, knees, hands and feet.15
Dimethicone barrier creams are less greasy than petroleum based options, while petroleum based products are more effective at reducing water loss. A moisturizer's feel matters because regular use matters. The best choice is a texture you will use regularly, not one that makes moisturising feel like a household chore.23
How do you use a dimethicone moisturizer?
- 1Wash gently, then pat skin dry rather than rubbing.
- 2Apply your moisturizer while skin is still damp after bathing or washing your hands. Gently massage it into the skin.
- 3Reapply when skin feels dry. Slightly dry skin can need only a light moisturizer at night, while more severe dryness needs more frequent application.
- 4Follow the directions for the finished product. A dimethicone sunscreen, moisturizer and medicated skin protectant do not all have the same instructions.
Moisturizers help reduce dryness and support the skin barrier. Their therapeutic effects are greatest in the first six hours after application, and applying them two to three times daily can be needed to maximise benefits. Barrier creams can persist for several hours, even after gentle washing, but should be applied sparingly and reapplied as necessary.24
Why is dimethicone used in hand creams?
Barrier creams help protect hands exposed to frequent water contact, harsh chemicals or repeated friction. For dyshidrotic eczema, a type of eczema affecting hands and feet, a dermatologist can recommend a barrier repair cream containing dimethicone to protect against irritation. Apply moisturizer after washing and whenever skin feels dry. For everyday dry hands, carry a hand cream and use it after each wash, giving the tube a job beyond occupying a bag.256
Who should be careful?
Barrier creams are usually well tolerated, but fragrances, preservatives and other ingredients can cause contact allergy. Some occlusive creams can aggravate acne on the face. Stop using a product if an allergic rash develops, and tell a dermatologist about burning, stinging or irritation. Most barrier creams should not go directly on broken skin.245
Some dimethicone skin protectants temporarily relieve chapped or cracked skin. Renew Dimethicone Skin Protectant directs users to avoid the eyes and deep or punctured wounds, and to stop and ask a doctor if symptoms worsen or do not improve within seven days. For persistent dryness despite regular moisturizing, see a dermatologist.57
