The Eczema Relief range includes creams, hydrogels and body washes, so the shared name is doing more work than it should. Choose the product by its job, not just the words "Eczema Relief" on the front.2

Cooling or soothing can happen immediately with Hydrogel or Flare Up Treatment, but eczema itself has no cure. A flare can last days to weeks. Regular moisturizing matters between flares too, because eczema weakens the skin barrier and makes moisture harder to retain.1

How should you apply it?

  1. 1Test a new product on the inside of your arm first. Apply a quarter sized amount daily for 7 to 10 days; use it more widely if the skin stays clear.
  2. 2Keep baths or showers to 5 to 10 minutes and use warm water. Apply moisturizer immediately afterwards while the skin is still damp.
  3. 3Smooth the moisturizer gently in the direction your hair grows rather than rubbing it into the skin.
  4. 4Reapply whenever your skin feels dry, including after handwashing. Follow the product's directions and any schedule your dermatologist has given you.
  5. 5If you also use a steroid cream or another skin treatment, leave 20 to 30 minutes between that treatment and the moisturizer. Ask your doctor which to apply first.

Eczema creates tiny cracks through which skin loses water quickly. Applying a gentle, fragrance free moisturizer after bathing helps address that dryness; the moisturizer is a regular part of care, not something reserved for the worst days.5

What if a cream is not enough?

For eczema, favor a fragrance free cream or ointment over a lotion. A cream absorbs quickly and is less greasy for daytime use, leaving the sales pitch as the most elaborate part of the routine. An ointment is thicker and more moisturizing for very dry, thickened skin or nighttime use, but should not be used on weeping eczema. These are general texture choices, not a reason to assume every Eucerin formula is interchangeable.34

Check for "fragrance free" on the exact product. "Unscented" can mean fragrance has been masked rather than removed. Other ingredients can also trigger a reaction, which is why testing a new moisturizer matters even when it is marketed for eczema.3

When is moisturizer not enough?

Contact a healthcare professional if eczema bleeds, leaks fluid, worsens or stays prolonged despite treatment. Frequent flares can need medical treatment alongside moisturizing. If a moisturizer causes persistent burning or stinging, inflamed hair follicles or a new rash, speak to a doctor, nurse or pharmacist about changing it.14

Keep emollient residue on clothing, bedding and dressings away from flames and cigarettes. If your moisturizer comes in a tub, use a clean spoon or spatula to remove it to reduce contamination.4
