What is the difference?

Both brands offer ingredients that help hydrate skin and support its moisture barrier, the outer layer that keeps moisture in. Both brands sell moisturizers for dry skin, so the logo is doing less work than the label.134

Eucerin's 5% urea claim applies to the Advanced Repair range, not every Eucerin moisturizer. Likewise, the petrolatum in CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is a detail of that cream, not a feature to assume across every CeraVe product. Check the exact product name and package ingredients before buying, especially if you are replacing an older bottle.23

Which one should you buy?

  • For a lighter everyday face moisturizer, start with CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion. It is explicitly intended for the face and body and contains no added fragrance.
  • For a richer moisturizer for dry facial or body skin, choose CeraVe Moisturizing Cream. Its petrolatum helps seal moisture in, and its texture is richer than the Daily Moisturizing Lotion.
  • For dry to very dry skin, consider Eucerin Advanced Repair if you want a formula with urea. The range includes a cream, lotion and hand cream, so select the format rather than treating the name as one product.
  • For sensitive skin, the two CeraVe formulas are fragrance free and accepted by the National Eczema Association. If you have known allergies, check the full ingredients rather than relying on the fragrance claim alone.

As general guidance, a lighter lotion or gel is usually a better fit for the face unless facial skin is very dry; dry body skin often benefits from a cream. A cream and a lotion from the same brand can feel different, despite wearing the same surname. CeraVe's cream is still labelled for facial use, so the face versus body distinction is a starting point, not a ban on cream.24

Are urea or ceramides better?

Urea and ceramides do different jobs. Urea is a humectant, an ingredient that draws water into the skin's outer layer. Ceramides are lipids that help keep moisture in. Hyaluronic acid is another humectant, while petrolatum and dimethicone help limit moisture loss. That makes the choice less about crowning one ingredient and more about selecting a complete moisturizer for your dryness and preferred texture. Eucerin Advanced Repair combines urea with a ceramide; the two CeraVe moisturizers combine ceramides with hyaluronic acid.34

How should you apply them?

  1. 1Wash with lukewarm rather than hot water. Keep baths or showers to five to 10 minutes.
  2. 2Pat skin dry without removing all the water. Apply moisturizer within three minutes to help trap that moisture.
  3. 3Use moisturizer after every bath or shower. For either CeraVe moisturizer, apply liberally and repeat as needed; follow the package directions for your chosen Eucerin product.
  4. 4In a facial routine, CeraVe places moisturizer after treatment products and before sun protection. Both CeraVe moisturizers can be used at any time of day.
  5. 5During the day, include sun protection of SPF 30 or higher rather than treating ordinary moisturizer as a substitute.

What results should you expect?

Expect hydration and support for the skin's moisture barrier, rather than a reason to keep switching brands. CeraVe describes its cream as helping skin feel smoother and softer, with barrier support through continued use. CeraVe claims 48 hours of hydration for Daily Moisturizing Lotion, and Eucerin makes a 48 hour hydration claim for Advanced Repair. Those duration claims are not instructions to skip application after washing. There is no fixed recovery deadline for excessively dry skin: treatment can also require addressing an underlying condition and protecting skin from repeated exposure to water or other irritants.1235

Which is better value?

CeraVe lists both Moisturizing Cream and Daily Moisturizing Lotion at $14.99. Compare the current price and pack size of the exact Eucerin and CeraVe products before deciding which costs less per ounce. A higher price does not mean a moisturizer will work better; the formula is the more useful basis for choosing.4

When is changing moisturizer not enough?

Seek medical care if dryness remains excessive or does not improve with moisturizer and changes to your washing routine. Conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can need treatment alongside moisturizing, and some people need a prescription moisturizer. If a dermatologist has already given you a treatment plan, follow the prescribed application frequency. Tell them if you cannot apply moisturizer often enough, cannot reach affected areas or cannot protect your skin at work.45
