The range includes products for different degrees of dryness, so 'Eucerin' is the start of the shopping list, not the finished decision. The US range names below differ from pH5 Cream and UREA REPAIR Face Cream sold in other markets; follow the directions and ingredient list on the exact pack you buy.12
Which Eucerin is right for your dry skin?
| Product | Best match | Useful difference |
|---|---|---|
| UREA REPAIR Face Cream | Dry to very dry facial skin that feels tight | Light, easily absorbed facial cream with urea and lactate; fragrance free. |
| pH5 Cream | Dry, sensitive face and body skin | Quickly absorbing cream with 5% dexpanthenol and a pH balance system. |
| Daily Hydration Lotion | Dry skin needing everyday moisture | The US range's everyday moisturizing lotion. |
| Advanced Repair Cream or Lotion | Very dry skin | Available as a cream or lotion in the US range. |
| Intensive Repair Lotion | Very dry, flaky or ashy skin | A lotion positioned specifically for these signs of dryness. |
| Original Healing Rich Cream or Lotion | Extremely dry, flaky or compromised skin | Rich emollients help moisturize and protect dry skin. |
For body care, Daily Hydration is the straightforward starting point for dry skin; Advanced Repair targets very dry skin, while Intensive Repair targets flaking as well. Original Healing comes as both a rich cream and a lotion, so even the word 'Original' has options. When dryness is substantial, a cream or ointment generally moisturizes better than a lotion.145
What should you use on a dry face?
UREA REPAIR Face Cream suits dry to very dry facial skin when tightness and roughness are the main problems. Urea and lactate bind moisture in the outer skin layer. The cream has a light, non greasy texture and is suitable under makeup or after shaving. Eucerin positions this version for mornings and the Rich Face Cream for more intensive overnight care. The facial formula is designed to absorb more easily on the face than UreaRepair PLUS 5% Urea Body Cream.2
pH5 Cream is another option when you want one cream for both the face and body, particularly for dry, sensitive skin. Its 5% dexpanthenol helps hydrate skin and reduce moisture loss. Dexpanthenol and panthenol are names for the same ingredient. The citrate buffer supports the skin's mildly acidic surface and protective barrier. A disrupted barrier loses more water and becomes more vulnerable to irritation. pH5 Cream absorbs quickly, but it has a scent; sensitive skin positioning does not mean fragrance free.3
How do you apply Eucerin for dry skin?
- 1Wash gently. For dry skin prone to eczema, use a fragrance free cleanser, lukewarm water and showers lasting 5 to 10 minutes. Focus cleanser on visibly dirty or oily areas and areas with body odor.
- 2Pat lightly with a towel. Apply body moisturizer while skin is still damp. For UREA REPAIR Face Cream, Eucerin tells you to cleanse, pat dry, then gently massage the cream into your face and neck.
- 3Spread body emollients gently in the direction your hair grows, rather than rubbing vigorously.
- 4Reapply when skin feels dry or tight, especially after washing your hands, bathing or swimming. General emollient care can require three or four applications daily; follow your product's directions.
If you use a steroid cream or another treatment for a skin condition, leave 20 to 30 minutes between that treatment and your moisturizer. Ask your doctor which to apply first. The gap prevents the moisturizer from diluting the treatment or spreading it beyond the area that needs it. When intensive sun exposure is expected, Eucerin directs users of UREA REPAIR Face Cream to apply sunscreen after the cream.26
How quickly should dryness improve?
UREA REPAIR Face Cream provides immediate hydration and relief from tightness. In a small test involving 24 people with healthy skin, twice daily application to the forearm improved hydration and roughness after one week. Hydration declined after applications stopped, so ongoing use matters. pH5 Cream also provides immediate moisture; in a two week use survey of 124 women with sensitive skin, 96% reported that skin felt smooth and protected.23
What if your skin is sensitive or eczema prone?
Before using pH5 Cream widely, Eucerin advises repeatedly testing a small amount on the inside of your elbow. Do not expand application if you develop redness, swelling or itching. For eczema prone skin, choose fragrance free care: dry skin can contribute to a flare, and creams or petroleum based ointments tend to moisturize better than lotions. If gentle moisturizing does not control the problem, see a dermatologist for a treatment plan.35
UREA REPAIR Face Cream is not designed or tested for children. An extremely dry face with marked tightness, roughness, itching or redness needs a different approach from routine facial dryness. If symptoms are worsening or you are unsure whether you have a skin condition, seek assessment from a pharmacist or dermatologist.2
What changes if you have diabetes?
Diabetes can cause very dry skin and deep cracks that increase infection risk. Moisturize daily with a fragrance free cream or ointment containing ceramides, including after bathing and whenever skin feels dry or itchy. Check your feet every day. Swelling, discoloration, tenderness, leaking wounds or wounds that worsen or fail to heal need immediate medical care. A moisturizer is not a treatment for an infected or unhealed wound.7
When should you stop or get help?
Emollients can cause persistent burning or stinging, inflamed hair follicles or facial rashes that aggravate acne. If these develop, speak to a pharmacist or clinician about changing products. Use a clean spoon or spatula for tubs. Keep moisturizer contaminated clothing and bedding away from flames and cigarettes: washing does not completely remove the fire risk. Moisturizer can also make floors and baths slippery.6
