What does urea do for skin?

Urea is part of the skin's natural moisture holding system. It binds water in the upper skin layers and helps loosen connections between dead skin cells, making dry, rough skin smoother. That second action is called keratolysis: softening and loosening hardened skin. Urea used in modern skincare is made synthetically, not extracted from urine. Lower strengths focus on everyday moisture care, while higher strengths are used for thicker, hardened areas.1

Cream and lotion are separate choices within UreaRepair, because apparently even a moisturiser needs a family tree. The 5% body cream combines urea, ceramide and other natural moisturising factors. These ingredients help skin hold water and reduce moisture loss. The cream is fragrance free and comes in a 450 ml jar.4

US Advanced Repair combines 5% urea with ceramide 3 and natural moisturising factors. The range describes its hydration as lightweight, quickly absorbed and lasting 48 hours. Roughness Relief focuses more explicitly on rough and bumpy texture. Its lotion moisturises and exfoliates, while its cream combines urea and emollients, ingredients that soften skin. The concentrated Spot Treatment is for stubborn local patches, not the same job as a general body lotion. The threefold concentration comparison does not give an exact percentage.23

How do you apply Eucerin with urea?

  1. 1Wash with a cleanser suitable for dry skin. Avoid strong soaps and long, hot baths or showers, which remove skin barrier lipids.
  2. 2Apply after washing while skin is clean and slightly damp. Urea moisturisers work best when applied to damp skin.
  3. 3Spread the product over its intended area. General urea medication directions call for a thin film; Eucerin tells you to massage the 5% body cream until absorbed.
  4. 4Follow your particular product's directions. The UreaRepair PLUS 5% Body Cream can be used as often as needed, rather than on a fixed morning or evening schedule.
  5. 5Keep urea products away from the eyes, lips and other sensitive areas. Do not apply them to open skin.

The rest of the routine should protect against further moisture loss. Frequent washing, detergents and hot water can keep aggravating dryness even when you moisturise. For exposed dry skin, choose a moisturising sunscreen with a high SPF and without irritating perfumes or colourants. If medication seems to be contributing to dryness, ask your doctor or pharmacist rather than changing the medication yourself.5

How soon should you notice a difference?

The UreaRepair PLUS 5% Body Cream offers immediate moisture relief and delays dryness and roughness for up to 48 hours. Regular use reduced itchiness after two weeks in its testing. The 30% cream is intended to make targeted rough patches visibly smoother after one week, with further improvement during regular use.4

Can you use Eucerin with urea on your face?

A body cream and a face cream have different intended uses, even when the names appear to have been filed by the same committee. Eucerin directs people seeking facial care to its UreaRepair Face Cream 5% Urea rather than the 5% body cream.4

Hyaluron Filler + Urea is another facial range, aimed at dry skin with fine lines and wrinkles. It combines urea for dryness with hyaluronic acid for hydration and smoother looking skin. Testing in volunteers with dry facial skin and wrinkles found improvements in dryness, wrinkle appearance, scaling, tightness and itching. The range is described as noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores, and free of perfume and colourants. Choose it for the combined dryness and wrinkle concern, rather than treating every urea product as interchangeable facial care.7

What if your skin is sensitive or you have a skin condition?

Dry skin is often sensitive, but sensitivity can also occur without dryness. Avoid irritating perfumes and colourants and choose products tested for sensitive skin. A suitable dry skin moisturiser can support care for a skin condition without replacing treatment. The 5% body cream is suitable for mature adult skin and for skin affected by xerosis, meaning pathological dryness, psoriasis or diabetes. Redness, flaking and intense itching can also occur with eczema or psoriasis, so those symptoms alone do not identify the cause.45

When should you stop or get medical advice?

Urea can cause irritation, redness or dryness. Stop using the product and seek medical advice for burning, significant itching, crusting or peeling of treated skin. Get urgent help for an allergic reaction involving swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. Open skin can burn or itch when urea is applied. Ask a clinician before using a medicated urea product on broken, inflamed, burnt or infected skin. Seek advice if symptoms persist, worsen or leave you unsure what is causing them.156

For medicated urea products, tell your care team if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding. Ask about use in children, who can need special care. Interactions are not expected, but tell your care team about other skin products used on the same treated area, including prescriptions. Follow the specific label rather than borrowing another product's instructions.6

How does urea cream compare with Eucerin?

Eucerin is a brand name and urea cream is a product category, so comparing them is asking a company to compete with an ingredient. An Eucerin cream can itself be a urea cream. Compare the actual strength, intended area and full formula. A prescribed urea treatment for thick skin or nails serves a different purpose from an everyday moisturiser; do not substitute one just because both contain urea.46

Does Eucerin contain urea?

Several Eucerin ranges do, including UreaRepair, US Advanced Repair, US Roughness Relief and Hyaluron Filler + Urea. The brand name alone does not identify the ingredients of a particular product. Read the packaging for the formula you are buying, because Eucerin updates ingredients and website lists can differ from the pack.2347
