What actually differs?
| Feature | UreaRepair 5% | UreaRepair PLUS 10% lotion |
|---|---|---|
| Urea concentration | 5% | 10% |
| Body skin needs | Dry, rough skin | Extremely dry skin prone to itchiness and flaking |
| Body formats | Lotion and body cream options | Rich body lotion |
| Texture | Depends on the selected lotion or cream | Rich, with quick absorption |
| Diabetic body skin | Included among Eucerin's moisturiser options | Included among Eucerin's moisturiser options; also tested in diabetic patients |
For general body dryness and roughness, the 5% body product is the straightforward choice. For extreme dryness with flakes or itchiness, choose the 10% lotion. Choose by the area and severity of dryness, not by treating the larger number as a promotion. For very dry, rough hands, Eucerin specifically recommends its 5% hand cream, so severe dryness does not automatically mean every area needs 10%.134
What does the urea do?
Urea occurs naturally in healthy skin and draws in and retains water. It also softens the outer layer of dead skin so that it can shed more easily. Eucerin's UreaRepair PLUS range combines urea and other natural moisturising factors, substances that help skin hold water, with ceramides that replenish the skin's protective fats. The 10% lotion contains this combination. Its higher urea percentage is a concentration difference, not a reason to assume every other ingredient or the texture is identical.125
How should you use it?
- 1Select the product for the area you want to moisturise. The range includes body, face, hand and foot products, so the percentage is not the entire job description.
- 2Clean the skin before moisturising. For hands, use lukewarm water and pat dry, including between the fingers.
- 3Apply urea preparations only to intact skin and keep them away from your eyes. Do not apply them to cracked, bleeding, infected or oozing areas, or severely reddened skin.
- 4For hands, moisturise regularly after washing and before bed. If frequent washing or chemical exposure causes dryness, keep hand cream available during the day.
How soon should you expect a difference?
The 10% lotion offers immediate soothing and lasting moisturisation. In a study of 64 adults with diabetes and dry to very dry skin, participants applied the lotion to their arms, legs and feet twice daily for two weeks. Dryness and flakiness improved after those two weeks, and participants reported less tightness and itchiness. That gives you a useful expectation for regular use, rather than a reason to keep increasing the percentage.1
Who should be careful?
Urea preparations can cause mild stinging, itching or a rash. Seek medical advice if these effects persist or become bothersome. Urea can increase the penetration of other substances, including corticosteroids, so check with your prescriber before adding it over the same area as a prescription cream. If dryness comes with an irritated skin barrier, simplify the routine and avoid excessive washing or exfoliation rather than automatically choosing a stronger product.25
Both strengths are options for moisturising diabetic body skin. If you have diabetes, check your feet regularly: nerve damage can make injuries harder to notice and increase infection risk. Have new skin changes assessed promptly by a doctor, dermatologist or pharmacist rather than treating them by switching moisturisers.14
