Why can a gentle cleanser leave skin tight?

Cleansers use surfactants, ingredients that loosen oil and dirt so water can rinse them away. Too much washing can remove the skin's surface oil and disturb its protective barrier, allowing more water to escape. Hot water can also strip moisture and leave skin dry, tight and uncomfortable.14

The standard CeraVe Foaming Cleanser is intended for normal to oily skin. Its ceramides help maintain the skin barrier, hyaluronic acid helps retain moisture and niacinamide helps calm skin. Those ingredients do not make repeated discomfort something to ignore.25

How should I wash without making dryness worse?

  1. 1Wet your face with lukewarm water rather than hot water.
  2. 2Massage the cleanser gently in circular motions. Do not scrub.
  3. 3Rinse thoroughly, then pat rather than rub your skin dry.
  4. 4Leave a little water on your skin and apply moisturizer to help trap that moisture.

CeraVe allows the standard cleanser at any time of day and gives general oily skin guidance of washing up to twice daily. Twice daily is not a minimum you must meet despite discomfort. Avoid adding extra washes to chase away every trace of oil: overwashing can increase dryness and irritation.15

Should I switch cleansers?

If your skin is dry or tight repeatedly, reconsider whether a normal to oily skin cleanser fits your needs. Combination skin can have an oily forehead, nose and chin but dry cheeks, so shine in one area does not mean the whole face needs the same oil removal.1

  • CeraVe Hydrating Cream to Foam Cleanser is intended for normal to dry skin, including sensitive skin, and changes from cream to foam.
  • CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Oil Cleanser is intended for dry to very dry skin, including sensitive skin, and changes from oil to a soft foam.

Could my acne treatment be contributing?

Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, adapalene, tazarotene, tretinoin and prescription isotretinoin tend to dry and irritate skin. Tightness after washing can therefore reflect the wider routine, not just the cleanser. Daily moisturizer helps skin tolerate these treatments. If you have acne, choose a moisturizer labeled oil free or noncomedogenic, meaning unlikely to clog pores.3

Check which foaming cleanser you own

The standard Foaming Facial Cleanser is different from the medicated acne washes. Check the full name and your package's current ingredient list, because formulas are updated.6

For the US CeraVe Acne Foaming Cleanser containing 4% benzoyl peroxide, the label advises starting once daily and reducing use to once daily or every other day if bothersome dryness or peeling occurs. Do not use that version on very sensitive skin or if you are sensitive to benzoyl peroxide. Stop and ask a doctor if irritation becomes severe. These directions belong to the 4% acne wash, not the standard cleanser.7
