What happens to your skin barrier?

Your stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin, helps control how much water escapes, which is the less photogenic part of the retinol conversation. Retinol changes how skin cells grow and mature, which makes "renewal" sound less like a spa and more like a departmental restructuring. In some people, the early response includes inflammation and disruption of that protective layer. Skin becomes dry when it loses too much water, so a disturbed barrier helps explain the dryness.345

The exact sequence behind retinol irritation is not fully understood. Barrier disruption and inflammatory signals are involved, rather than dryness being explained simply by faster shedding of surface cells. Retinol is converted inside skin into retinoic acid, its active form; retinol and prescription retinoic acid are related, but they are not interchangeable in strength or tolerance.14

How to use retinol with less dryness

  1. 1Test a small amount on a small area first. Wait a couple of days and check for marked redness or itching before applying retinol more widely.
  2. 2Choose the lowest strength you can find. Start every other night, or once every few days if you need a slower introduction. Follow your product's directions or your prescriber's instructions.
  3. 3At bedtime, wash with a gentle cleanser and pat dry. Do not scrub.
  4. 4Apply a thin layer, using about a pea sized amount for the whole face. Keep retinol out of your eyes, nose and mouth.
  5. 5Finish with a facial moisturizer. Increase retinol frequency gradually only as your skin tolerates it.
  6. 6Use sunscreen during the day, seek shade and cover exposed skin with clothing. Retinoids make skin more sensitive to sunlight.

What helps when your face is already dry?

Moisturize more than once daily if needed. Creams and ointments generally retain moisture better than lotions, which gives retinol's supporting cast a distinctly unglamorous wardrobe. Ceramides help strengthen the protective barrier, while hyaluronic acid adds moisture. A moisturizer can replace lost moisture without an elaborate product description, which saves the jar from having to submit a CV.57

Avoid hot water, astringent toners and rubbing your face. Do not try to scrub or exfoliate away retinol flakes: removing more of the surface layer can add damage and keep irritation going. Choose fragrance free facial products, and use a gentle touch when washing and moisturizing.7

How long does the dryness last?

Early irritation is usually temporary, and many users develop tolerance over several weeks. There is no fixed day when dryness must stop. Visible improvements also take time: some changes take several weeks, while wrinkle improvements usually take several months. Dry skin treated effectively at home often improves within two weeks; persistent or worsening dryness deserves a dermatologist's assessment.245

When should you stop and get help?

Avoid retinoids when your skin has substantial redness or inflammation, and ask a dermatologist about alternatives. Existing dryness, skin allergies or sensitive skin can make retinol a poor choice. In darker skin, irritation can trigger dark marks. Contact a healthcare professional if dryness is not improving, looks wet and red, or itching interferes with daily life. Do not use retinoids during pregnancy.67
