Why does peeling happen?

Skin normally sheds dead cells without you noticing. When skin loses enough moisture, visible flakes and roughness appear; excessive dryness can also cause cracks, pain and peeling. Irritant contact dermatitis means inflammation from something touching and damaging the skin's protective barrier. Irritation develops when damage happens faster than the skin can repair it. Strength, amount and frequency of use all matter, and several mild irritants can add up.34

Allergic contact dermatitis is different: your immune system reacts to a substance touching the skin. You can develop an allergy after years of using the same product. The rash often appears 24 to 48 hours after exposure, so the last bottle you applied is not automatically the culprit. Stinging, burning, itching and peeling can overlap between causes; those symptoms alone do not identify the problem.15

Which skincare ingredients cause peeling?

  • Retinol, prescription retinoids and benzoyl peroxide can make skin more sensitive or cause peeling.
  • Alpha and beta hydroxy acids dissolve dead skin cells. Excessive exfoliation can leave skin red and irritated.
  • Soaps and detergents can irritate skin, especially with repeated exposure.
  • Fragrances and some preservatives in topical medicines can trigger contact allergy.

Should I stop skincare if my face is peeling?

Stop the suspected irritating product rather than abandoning moisturizer and gentle cleansing. Avoid adding scrubs, brushes or acid exfoliants to remove the flakes: exfoliating alongside retinol, retinoids or benzoyl peroxide can worsen dryness. If you already have eczema, your skin is particularly susceptible to irritation. A product tolerated elsewhere can still irritate your face, especially your eyelids.124

For adapalene specifically, reduce application frequency or pause treatment if skin becomes very irritated. Stop and contact your doctor if irritation is severe or does not improve. Do not apply adapalene to broken, sunburned or eczema affected skin. Avoid other retinoids, salicylic acid, glycolic acid and abrasive cleansers while using it. Stop adapalene if you think you are pregnant, and check with your GP if breastfeeding.6

How do I treat peeling skin from skincare?

  1. 1Remove any remaining irritant with water, then avoid further exposure to the suspected trigger.
  2. 2Simplify cleansing to a soap free cleanser and use warm rather than hot water.
  3. 3Apply a fragrance free, hypoallergenic moisturizing cream or ointment. Moisturizers help skin retain moisture and repair itself.
  4. 4Let loose skin shed naturally. Picking or pulling it off creates openings that let bacteria in.
  5. 5Protect your skin from sun damage. If you use adapalene, use SPF 50 sunscreen and protective clothing, even on cloudy days.

Creams and ointments are thicker than lotions, so choosing a texture is more useful than choosing the bottle with the most comforting adjectives.7

How long does peeling take to settle?

The cause determines the recovery time. Contact dermatitis clears within two to three weeks in most cases, but can return if the trigger remains. Adapalene's common burning, irritation, redness and dryness tend to improve after two to four weeks; that is not a deadline for all peeling. Chronic irritation can be slow to resolve.456

When should I see a doctor?

Get medical help for unexplained peeling, a severe reaction or symptoms that do not improve with treatment. Yellow crusts, pus, swelling, increasing tenderness or warmth, fever or chills need medical assessment. For repeated reactions, a clinician can review your exposures and arrange patch testing to identify a contact allergy.357
