Choose by ingredients and the problem you want to address, not the price tag or a promise of glow on the box. Expensive skincare is not automatically more effective, however seriously the jar takes itself. These are product categories to choose from, not a ranked list of brands.2

How should you use the products in the morning?

  1. 1Wash with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. Massage with your hands, then pat dry rather than rubbing.
  2. 2Apply vitamin C if dark spots are your main concern. Use one serum and keep it separate from alpha hydroxy acid exfoliants.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer to help hold moisture in your skin.
  4. 4Finish with broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher facial sunscreen. Use a separate sunscreen even if your foundation or moisturizer contains SPF.
12

Wear sunscreen throughout the year, not only during sunny holidays. Vitamin C can add protection alongside sunscreen, but it does not replace sunscreen. Daily protection matters especially when dullness comes with signs of sun damage.13

What should you use at night?

  1. 1Remove makeup if you are wearing it, then wash with a gentle cleanser.
  2. 2If you choose retinol, apply a pea sized amount at night. Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that can help improve dark spots and fine lines.
  3. 3Follow with moisturizer. A formula containing ceramides or hyaluronic acid is an option when treatment leaves your skin dry.

An optional toner remains optional, however much shelf space its bottle seems to expect. Toner can cause dryness or irritation, so it is not a necessary purchase for this routine.1

Should you exfoliate extremely dull skin?

Exfoliation removes dead cells from the outer skin layer. Chemical exfoliants dissolve those cells; scrubs and brushes remove them physically. Exfoliation is optional, and more aggressive treatment is not automatically the right choice for a dull complexion. Dry, sensitive or acne prone skin needs particular care because mechanical exfoliation can be too irritating.4

For rough texture, a glycolic acid exfoliant a couple of times a week is one option. Choose a mild product and follow its directions; the right frequency also depends on your skin and the exfoliation method. More aggressive exfoliation generally needs less frequent use. Moisturize immediately afterward.14

  • Do not exfoliate sunburned skin or areas with open cuts or wounds.
  • Avoid strong chemical exfoliation and abrasive methods if you have darker skin or develop dark marks after skin injuries. Aggressive exfoliation can increase pigmentation.
  • Check your existing routine before adding an exfoliant. Retinol, prescription retinoids and benzoyl peroxide can already make skin more sensitive or prone to peeling.
  • If you use a scrub or rinse off exfoliator, apply gently and rinse with lukewarm rather than hot water.
4

General chemical exfoliant guidance is to use the product exactly as directed: extra product or more frequent application can cause raw, irritated skin. If dryness or irritation develops, stop for a few days rather than increasing the treatment.5

What if your skin is sensitive?

Introduce new products one at a time. For sensitive skin, try a pea sized dot behind your ear along the jawline and wait one or two days before applying the product across your face. Avoid heavily fragranced products. If skin irritation develops, stop the product and make an appointment with a dermatologist.12

How long does a brighter complexion take?

Allow a few months for treatment products to show their main benefits. Many skincare products take around three or four months to deliver their greatest benefit, rather than changing your complexion after a few applications. Take a photograph each month to track progress. That is a general skincare timeframe, not a fixed deadline for every vitamin C or retinol formula.3

When is a professional peel worth considering?

A dermatologist can assess whether a chemical peel would help dullness, rough patches or uneven coloring. A professional peel uses a chemical solution to remove skin layers; the new skin is usually smoother, more evenly colored and brighter. A light peel offers subtle improvement over time and is often performed as a series. Medium and deep peels remove deeper layers and require more recovery, so they are not simply stronger versions of a daily serum.6

Darker skin has a greater risk of darkening after a peel. Pregnancy, birth control pills and a family history of facial discoloration can also increase pigmentation risks. Tell the dermatologist about medicines, sensitive skin, unusual scarring and cold sores before treatment. Peel suitability and depth need an individual assessment.6

After a light peel, redness followed by scaling can last three to seven days. Follow the clinician's moisturizer and sun protection instructions. Before a planned peel, retinoids generally need to be stopped one to two weeks beforehand unless the clinician directs otherwise. Do not carry your usual active product routine straight through a procedure.6
