Why does toner go first?

The general layering rule is to start with thinner textures and work toward thicker ones. Toner goes after cleansing, while essence goes before moisturizer. COSRX tells you to apply the Snail 96 essence after thinner products and before thicker products. Toner and essence are different routine steps, even if the names make the bathroom shelf sound like a research department.23

How to layer them

Can you use both morning and night?

The same toner, essence and moisturizer order fits morning and evening routines. COSRX suggests using the Snail 96 essence once or twice daily as desired. General toner guidance also allows once or twice daily, depending on tolerance and the rest of your routine. You do not need to add a second daily application just because you own both bottles.123

What should the snail essence feel like?

The Snail 96 essence has a stretchy, sometimes stringy texture and forms a protective film that helps retain moisture. That texture is part of the product, rather than a reason to move it ahead of toner. The Advanced Snail Radiance Dual Essence is a lighter gel, but COSRX places it after thinner layers and before thicker serums or creams too.2

The Snail 92 cream has a softer cream texture. Normal and oily skin types can use it as their regular moisturizer. For dry skin, COSRX also describes using it after thinner products and before a heavier cream. The distinction is essence versus cream, not whether the product contains snail mucin.2

What if your skin is sensitive?

Introduce one new product at a time rather than starting both together. That makes it easier to identify a product your skin cannot tolerate. Patch test new products on your inner arm before applying them to your face, especially if your skin is sensitive. A product that leaves your face tight or dry is not a good fit.1

If you use a prescription skin treatment, follow its directions rather than moving it around to accommodate these layers. General dermatology guidance places medication immediately after cleansing. Do you need both products?

Neither toner nor essence is compulsory: a basic routine can consist of cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection. Your routine does not need every available step, even if the bottles would prefer a larger committee.
