COSRX snail mucin repairing serum: what it does and how to use it

What does the snail essence do?

Think of the essence as a moisture support step. COSRX describes snail secretion filtrate as replenishing moisture, protecting the skin barrier and soothing sensitized skin after breakouts. The skin barrier is the skin's protective outer layer. COSRX positions its snail kit for dehydration, acne prone skin and dark spots; those are the brand's intended uses, not reasons to expect every concern to respond.1

The essence's ingredient list starts with snail secretion filtrate and also includes betaine, butylene glycol, sodium hyaluronate, allantoin and panthenol. The essence and cream have separate formulas, so choose by the product name rather than treating the snail range as interchangeable.1

How do you apply it?

1. 1Cleanse your face. In the COSRX snail kit routine, massage the cleanser onto wet skin and rinse thoroughly with tepid water.
2. 2Apply the essence evenly, avoiding the eye area. COSRX specifies a proper amount rather than a fixed number of pumps.
3. 3Follow with cream. In the kit routine, the separate eye cream comes between the essence and face cream.

COSRX sells the essence separately as well as in a trial kit, so the snail theme does not require a matching bathroom cast.12

How should you test it before using it on your face?

Use this general skincare testing method before adding the essence:

1. 1Choose a spot about the size of a quarter on the underside of your arm or inside your elbow, where the product will not be rubbed or washed away.
2. 2Apply your usual amount to that spot twice daily for seven to ten days. This is a testing schedule, not a COSRX facial use schedule.
3. 3Leave the essence on as you would during normal use.
4. 4If the spot stays free of redness, itching and swelling, begin using the product on your face.

What should make you stop?

If you develop redness, itching or swelling, gently wash the product off and stop using it. A cool compress or petroleum jelly can help relieve the reaction. See a dermatologist if the reaction is severe and these measures do not relieve it. If you cannot identify the ingredient responsible, a dermatologist can arrange patch testing, a medical test used to investigate skin allergies.4

Skin around the eyes is thin and delicate, making it more vulnerable to contact dermatitis, an irritated or allergic skin rash. If a new product seems to be causing an itchy rash there, stop using the suspected product.5

Can you put it on your lips?

Keep the essence on facial skin, not the moist surfaces of your lips or inside your mouth. A published case describes a teenager who developed painful, swollen, crusting lips after repeatedly applying the COSRX snail product there. Natural ingredients can still irritate skin or trigger allergic reactions; snail origin does not remove that risk.6
