What does a scrub actually do?
Exfoliation removes dead cells from the outer surface of skin. Those cells can contribute to dullness, uneven appearance and clogged pores. Removing them can improve surface texture. A scrub belongs in the optional part of the routine, even if its name sounds like a household chore.13
A scrub is mechanical exfoliation: particles physically remove dead cells. Chemical exfoliation uses substances such as alpha or beta hydroxy acids to dissolve them instead. Exfoliation can be used on the face and body, but too much can cause sensitivity or irritation.13
Should you use the same scrub on your face and body?
Choose the method for the skin you are treating, rather than assuming one scrub suits both areas. Mechanical exfoliation can be too irritating for dry, sensitive or acne prone skin. Oily, thicker skin can be better suited to it. Avoid aggressive exfoliation if you have a darker skin tone or develop dark marks after acne, bites or burns, because it can increase pigmentation.1
If you have rosacea, do not rub or scrub your face when cleansing, because this can worsen the condition. Use an emollient soap substitute instead, and avoid perfumed soap. A fragrance free moisturizer can help when skin is dry or sensitive.4
How do you use a face and body cleansing scrub?
- 1Check the area first. Do not exfoliate open cuts, wounds or sunburned skin.
- 2Apply the scrub gently with small circular movements for about 30 seconds.
- 3Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, not hot water.
- 4Apply moisturizer immediately afterwards, because exfoliation can dry skin.
How often should you scrub?
Frequency depends on your skin type and how aggressive the exfoliation is. Stronger exfoliation needs to be done less often. Your face washing schedule is not a scrub schedule. Reduce or stop exfoliation if skin becomes red or irritated.1
What should you do between scrubs?
Wash your face once in the morning and once at night, and after heavy sweating. Choose a gentle, nonabrasive cleanser without alcohol. Wet your face with lukewarm water and apply the cleanser with your fingertips. A washcloth or mesh sponge can irritate skin; extra equipment does not earn a promotion to better cleansing.2
Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel. Apply moisturizer if your skin feels dry or itchy. Be gentle around the eyes and avoid pulling the skin when applying cream.2
When should you be more careful?
Prescription retinoids, retinol and benzoyl peroxide can make skin more sensitive or cause peeling. Adding exfoliation can worsen dryness or breakouts. Ask a dermatologist whether exfoliation suits you if you are unsure about your skin type or how it fits with your current treatment.13
