What can bakuchiol do for acne?

Acne involves excess oil, blocked follicles, bacteria and inflammation. Bakuchiol has antibacterial properties and can help regulate oiliness and prevent clogged pores. That makes it a plausible supporting ingredient, rather than a reason to abandon an acne treatment that is working.134

In a trial involving 111 people, a cream containing bakuchiol, Ginkgo biloba extract and mannitol was added to adapalene 0.1% gel for two months. Both treatment groups improved, but the active cream gave better results for inflamed spots, overall acne severity and oiliness than a comparison cream. The acne results came from a combination cream used alongside adapalene, which makes the single ingredient headline rather crowded.1

The tested cream also contained salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acid esters, enoxolone and zinc gluconate. Treat that result as a reason to consider a supporting acne formula, not as a prediction for any bakuchiol serum. There is no established bakuchiol concentration for acne in the available clinical guidance.12

Should you choose bakuchiol or an acne treatment?

For treating acne, benzoyl peroxide and topical retinoids have stronger support than plant based alternatives, even if their names are less suited to botanical packaging. Benzoyl peroxide reduces acne causing bacteria. Retinoids such as adapalene unclog pores and reduce inflammation. Salicylic acid is another option for clogged pores, while azelaic acid also treats bacteria and the dark marks left after spots clear.2

Dark marks are not the same as active acne. In darker skin, marks after inflammation can last substantially longer than the original spots. If both breakouts and lingering marks bother you, an acne treatment that also targets discoloration is a more direct choice.3

How do you use bakuchiol?

  1. 1Wash with a gentle cleanser. Avoid scrubbing, which can irritate skin and worsen acne.
  2. 2Apply a bakuchiol serum before moisturizer, or a bakuchiol cream after other serums. General use is once or twice daily, with morning and evening applications if used twice.
  3. 3Wear sunscreen during the day. Bakuchiol does not replace sun protection.

If you already use prescription acne treatment, discuss adding bakuchiol with your dermatologist. The combination trial used the cream in the morning and adapalene in the evening; that schedule is specific to the tested regimen, not a universal layering rule.14

What if you have sensitive skin or are pregnant?

Bakuchiol is generally gentler than retinol, so it can be an option for sensitive skin. Irritation and allergic reactions are still possible. Stop using a product that causes a reaction and seek medical advice. If retinoids irritated you previously, a dermatologist can also help adjust the amount, frequency or moisturizer order rather than automatically replacing them.46

Pregnancy safety for bakuchiol remains uncertain. Talk to your healthcare provider before using it during pregnancy rather than treating a retinol alternative as automatically safe.4

How long should you wait for results?

Acne treatment generally takes at least six to eight weeks before fewer breakouts appear. The bakuchiol combination was assessed over two months; a reliable timeline for bakuchiol alone is not settled. Applying extra acne medication will not clear spots faster.16

See a doctor if self treatment is not helping, spots are deep or painful, acne is causing scars, or breakouts affect your mental health. Hot, swollen or red skin also needs medical assessment.5
