How does oil turn into a pimple?
Sebum is the oil made by your skin's oil glands. Most of these glands empty into hair follicles, the small openings where hairs grow. Sebum reduces water loss and helps protect skin from bacteria and fungi, so the oil department does have a legitimate job. The problem is excess oil becoming part of a blockage, not the existence of oil itself.3
A plug of oil and skin cells can form a whitehead or blackhead. When bacteria become trapped and the immune system reacts, an inflamed pimple can develop. Acne can also cause deeper, painful lumps called nodules or cysts. Surface shine and a blocked follicle are therefore different things: removing visible oil is not the same as treating acne.24
Why is your skin oily and breaking out?
Genes and hormones play a key role in oily skin. Hormonal changes during puberty, periods, pregnancy and menopause can contribute to acne. Certain medicines and greasy skin or hair products can also trigger breakouts. Acne is not limited to teenagers, and it often runs in families. If your breakouts started after a medicine change, discuss that pattern with your prescriber.124
What should you do about oily skin with pimples?
- Wash gently morning and evening with a mild cleanser and warm water. Avoid hot water, scrubbing and repeated washing throughout the day.
- Remove makeup at the end of the day. Choose skincare and makeup labelled noncomedogenic, meaning designed not to clog pores, and look for oil free or water based cosmetics.
- Keep oily hair away from your face and wash it regularly. Greasy hair products can contribute to acne.
- Do not squeeze or pick pimples. Picking can cause scarring, infection and slower healing.
Scrubbing can irritate skin and make acne worse, which is a poor return on the extra elbow grease. Cleansing twice daily can reduce oiliness and help prevent clogged pores; washing harder is not the next treatment step.56
When do you need an acne treatment?
If gentle skincare is not clearing the pimples, ask a pharmacist about salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Follow the product's directions rather than adding more because your skin looks oily. Salicylic acid can unclog pores, but many people need more than salicylic acid alone to control acne.456
Acne products can cause redness, dryness or excessive peeling. If a salicylic acid cleanser dries or irritates your skin, reduce its use by alternating with a gentle cleanser, using the gentle cleanser in the morning and salicylic acid before bed. Avoid skincare containing retinol or retinyl palmitate during pregnancy or breastfeeding.45
Does greasy food make your skin oily?
Diet probably has little effect on whether your skin is oily, and greasy food is not an established cause of acne. Foods that raise blood sugar quickly and cow's milk might worsen acne in some people, but the connection remains uncertain. Notice patterns in your own breakouts rather than banning foods by reputation. Acne care still includes skincare and medication.147
How long should you wait before getting help?
Acne treatment can take 6 to 8 weeks to show a response. See a doctor if self care and pharmacy treatments have not helped after several months. Seek help sooner for deep or painful lumps, worsening acne, scars, hot and swollen skin, or breakouts affecting your mental health. Prescription treatments can address inflammation, bacteria, oiliness or hormonal contributors rather than just surface shine.46
