How often can you use witch hazel on your face?

There is no single number of facial applications that fits every witch hazel product or purpose. For example, T.N. Dickinson's Witch Hazel Astringent tells you to apply it as often as necessary for temporary relief of minor irritation from cuts, scrapes and insect bites. Treat that as a direction for those uses, not a requirement to use it morning and night as a toner. Different uses have different directions, so the product name is not doing the label's homework.12

Witch hazel can also be used to freshen facial skin during prolonged mask wear when you cannot wash your face. In that situation, let your skin and any facial hair dry completely before putting the mask back on. This is a situational use, rather than a fixed morning or evening routine.3

Should sensitive skin use witch hazel daily?

If you have sensitive skin or rosacea, a condition that causes facial redness and flare ups, do not assume witch hazel belongs in a daily routine. Witch hazel and alcohol are both reported irritation triggers among people with rosacea. Many also avoid astringents because they can be too harsh. More products do not mean healthier skin, even if a crowded bathroom shelf looks like a plan.34

Before applying a new product across your face, test a small amount on your neck or jawline and wait at least a few hours. If you react, avoid the product rather than trying to build up to daily use. Use soft cotton pads or clean fingertips, and avoid rubbing or scrubbing. For sensitive skin, fewer products and gentle application are more useful than adding another routine step.4

How do you apply a first aid witch hazel liquid?

For T.N. Dickinson's Witch Hazel Astringent, follow these directions:

  1. 1Remove the protective inner seal.
  2. 2Moisten a cotton ball or cleansing pad with the liquid.
  3. 3Gently wipe the skin, avoiding contact with your eyes.
  4. 4Repeat as necessary for the labelled minor skin irritations.

What should you expect, and when should you stop?

The first aid use is temporary relief of minor irritation, not a course with a promised improvement date. Stop using T.N. Dickinson's and ask a doctor if the condition worsens or symptoms persist for more than seven days. Use the liquid externally only. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a poison control centre immediately.1

A skin rash is a rare reported reaction to Witch Hazel USP. A reaction is a reason to avoid the product, not to increase the frequency or keep applying it until your skin adjusts.45

When is daily witch hazel use appropriate?

For white, moist skin between the toes, daily witch hazel is one foot care option. Wash your feet daily in warm water and dry them thoroughly, gently dabbing between the toes if the skin is fragile. Avoid soaking for more than ten minutes because prolonged soaking can reduce natural oils and cause dryness. Moisturising cream belongs on dry areas of the feet, not between the toes. If you have concerns about your feet, contact a foot care service rather than extending this routine to an unexplained problem.2
