What adapalene does for pores
Adapalene unclogs pores and helps prevent new blackheads. The useful target is congestion, rather than a promise of permanently smaller pores. Acne develops when hair follicles become blocked with excess oil and dead skin cells. Adapalene is a retinoid, a medicine derived from vitamin A, used for acne including blackheads and whiteheads.234
How to apply adapalene
- 1Remove makeup, then gently wash with a mild cleanser. Pat your skin dry rather than rubbing.
- 2With clean fingertips, spread a thin film over the whole area prone to clogged pores. Avoid eyelids, lips, and the inside of your eyes, nose and mouth. Wash your hands afterwards.
- 3Wait until the adapalene has absorbed before applying moisturiser. Follow the amount and frequency on your own package or prescription.
- 4During the day, use sunscreen and protective clothing. Avoid tanning beds and unnecessary prolonged sun exposure.
Adapalene is usually used once daily at bedtime. A small test area is sensible when starting. Differin cream and gel containing 0.1% adapalene are examples; follow your own product's directions rather than borrowing another formula's instructions. Never apply more than once daily or double up after a missed application.15
What to use alongside adapalene
Your evening routine needs gentle cleansing and moisturising, not enough supporting products to require credits. Avoid adding other retinoids, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, abrasive cleansers or strongly drying products while using adapalene because their effects can add to irritation. Do not hot wax treated skin.145
Products labelled non comedogenic or oil free are sensible choices for clogged pores, even if those terms are less glamorous than the promises on the front. Non comedogenic means designed not to clog pores. Some products with these labels still cause breakouts in some people, so change a supporting product if it appears to worsen your acne. Avoid scrubbing or squeezing blackheads.36
If you already have a prescribed acne routine, follow that plan. Benzoyl peroxide and topical antibiotics can be used alongside adapalene, but check how to schedule separate products with your pharmacist rather than layering everything together.16
How long until clogged pores improve?
Acne treatment can show some improvement in four to six weeks, but adapalene's full benefit can take eight to twelve weeks or longer. Previously unseen pimples can surface during the first few weeks. Keep using treatment when acne clears to help prevent new breakouts, rather than repeatedly switching products.56
When to pause or get medical help
Dryness, redness, peeling and stinging are common early effects. If skin becomes very irritated, reduce frequency or pause treatment. Stop and contact your doctor if irritation is severe or does not improve. Do not apply adapalene to broken, sunburned or eczema affected skin; wait until it heals.15
Do not start adapalene during pregnancy or when planning pregnancy without medical advice. Stop if you think you are pregnant and contact your doctor. Ask your doctor before using it while breastfeeding. Discuss use in children under 12 with a clinician. Get urgent medical help for hives, breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.15
See a doctor if treatment is not helping, or if you have deep painful spots, scarring or acne affecting your mental health. Adapalene alone is not suitable treatment for severe acne with deep nodules or cysts.34
