You might also see adapalene described as a retinoid like compound; it is classified as a third generation retinoid with selective activity at retinoid receptors, the targets it acts on inside cells.34
What does adapalene do?
Adapalene increases skin cell turnover, helping unblock pores and reduce the formation of blackheads and spots. It is used for mild to moderate acne, including comedonal acne, which means acne with blackheads and whiteheads. Topical retinoids can also treat some pimples, help fade dark marks left after acne and serve as maintenance treatment once breakouts are controlled. Deep, painful lumps or acne causing scars need medical assessment rather than adapalene alone.2567
How does adapalene compare with other retinoids?
| Retinoid | Practical difference |
|---|---|
| Adapalene | An acne medicine available without prescription in the US and on prescription in the UK. |
| Tretinoin | A prescription acne retinoid that also has established uses for fine wrinkles and sun damage. |
| Tazarotene and trifarotene | Other prescription retinoids used to treat acne. |
| Retinol and retinaldehyde | Retinoids commonly added to cosmetics. |
For acne, adapalene offers a nonprescription option in the US. Adapalene generally causes less irritation than tretinoin, although it can still irritate skin. Choose with your prescriber if another retinoid is needed. Cosmetic retinoids and acne medicines share a category, not a job description.24
How do you use adapalene?
- 1Remove makeup, wash gently with a mild cleanser and pat the skin dry.
- 2Apply a thin film across the whole affected area, not just individual spots. Adapalene is usually used once daily at bedtime; follow your package or prescription directions.
- 3Avoid the eyes, lips and mouth, and do not apply to broken, sunburned or eczema affected skin. Wash your hands afterwards.
- 4Let adapalene absorb before applying moisturizer. If irritation is a concern, ask your clinician about starting two to three nights weekly or applying moisturizer first.
- 5During the day, seek shade, wear protective clothing and use sunscreen with broad spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher and water resistance.
How long does adapalene take to work?
Early improvement can take six to eight weeks; the full benefit of adapalene can take eight to twelve weeks or longer. Acne can initially worsen as previously unseen pimples reach the surface. Applying extra will not speed results. If blackheads and whiteheads persist after six to eight weeks, a dermatologist can help decide whether treatment needs changing.1235
What should you avoid combining with adapalene?
Do not add another retinoid. Avoid glycolic acid, salicylic acid, abrasive cleansers and strongly drying products because they can add irritation. Benzoyl peroxide can be used alongside adapalene and is included with it in Epiduo; follow your treatment directions rather than adding it automatically. Tell your pharmacist about other medicines and skincare products, and avoid hot waxing treated areas.356
Who should be careful, and when should you stop?
Dryness, redness, peeling and burning can occur, especially during the first two to four weeks. Stop and contact your doctor if irritation is severe or does not improve. Get urgent medical help for hives, breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. Do not use adapalene during pregnancy; stop if you think you are pregnant and contact your doctor. If planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, discuss an alternative before using it.356
