Is Olay Regenerist noncomedogenic?

Which Regenerist product do you mean?

Regenerist appears on products with different formulas, sunscreen strengths and directions. Regenerist is a range name, not a pore related qualification, so the full product name matters more than the large word on the front.12

• Canadian Enhancing UV Lotion, also called Regenerating Lotion with Sunscreen SPF 15: Olay describes it as noncomedogenic, light, nongreasy and fast absorbing.
• US Micro Sculpting Cream Moisturizer Fragrance Free: Olay lists dry, normal and oily skin types, but does not explicitly call this cream noncomedogenic. Fragrance free is a separate feature, not an answer about clogged pores.
• Canadian Micro Sculpting Cream with Sunscreen SPF 30: Olay describes a lightweight moisturizer with broad spectrum sun protection, without an explicit noncomedogenic claim.
• US Micro Sculpting Hydrating Moisturizer SPF 30: the label lists sunscreen ingredients and safety directions, without an explicit noncomedogenic claim. Its formula should not be treated as identical to the Canadian SPF 30 cream.

Does noncomedogenic mean no breakouts?

Noncomedogenic means a moisturizer is unlikely to cause acne, not that breakouts are impossible. If you have acne, look for "noncomedogenic", "nonacnegenic", "oil free" or "won't clog pores" on the exact container you are buying. These descriptions identify products least likely to cause acne.56

Olay describes both the SPF 15 lotion and the fragrance free cream as light, so texture alone cannot do the label reading for you. If an explicit noncomedogenic claim is your deciding factor, the Canadian SPF 15 lotion is the confirmed option among these products; an oily skin listing alone does not settle that question.12

How should you use the version you have?

1. 1Cleanse first. For acne friendly moisturizing in general, applying moisturizer after washing while some water remains on your skin helps trap moisture.
2. 2If you use the US fragrance free Micro Sculpting Cream, apply any existing treatments from thinnest to thickest, then gently massage in the cream until absorbed. Olay directs daily use and suggests an amount about the size of a nickel.
3. 3Follow that fragrance free cream with sunscreen in the morning. For the Canadian SPF 15 lotion, Olay directs application before sun exposure. For the SPF 30 versions, apply liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapply at least every two hours.

For the US SPF 30 moisturizer, use a water resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating. Keep the product out of your eyes, do not apply it to damaged or broken skin, and stop use and ask a doctor if a rash occurs.4

What if you already use acne treatment?

Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, adapalene, tazarotene, tretinoin and prescription isotretinoin can dry and irritate skin. Daily moisturizer can help skin tolerate these treatments. Choose an acne friendly moisturizer rather than avoiding moisturizer just because your skin feels oily.5

Acne improvement takes longer than an immediate hydrated feeling. In studies combining acne friendly moisturizer with a dermatologist selected cleanser and acne medication, most patients saw less acne within four to eight weeks. That timing describes a complete acne routine, not an Olay Regenerist result.5

If nothing clears your acne, see a dermatologist for treatment. If you suspect a prescription medicine is causing breakouts, keep taking it and speak with the doctor who prescribed it rather than stopping it yourself.6
