Olay Regenerist Wrinkle Correcting Serum: a guide

What is in the MAX serum?

The Canadian MAX formula contains niacinamide, also called vitamin B3, and two named peptides: palmitoyl pentapeptide 4 and palmitoyl dipeptide 7. Peptides are chains of amino acids used here to help skin look smoother and firmer. Glycerin and dimethicone are also in the formula, alongside panthenol, tocopheryl acetate and Tropaeolum majus flower, leaf and stem extract. Olay describes niacinamide as helping skin retain moisture and supporting surface cell turnover, the renewal of cells at the skin's surface.12

Olay's Canadian "2x the peptides" claim compares MAX with Olay Wrinkle Correction Serum. It is not a peptide percentage, and it does not mean twice the wrinkle reduction. Neither the Canadian nor US MAX ingredient information gives a numerical niacinamide concentration. Choose MAX for its formula and intended use, rather than treating "MAX" as a measured dose.1

How do you apply it?

3. 3Apply moisturizer after the serum. Olay directs morning and night use.

MAX is described as lightweight, fast absorbing and non greasy. Its place in the routine is before moisturizer, rather than instead of moisturizer. Those directions also differ from the Canadian Regenerating Serum, which specifically tells you to wait until the serum is fully absorbed before applying moisturizer.14

What results should you expect?

MAX targets hydration, a smoother skin surface, visibly reduced wrinkles and firmer looking skin. There is no stated wrinkle improvement deadline for MAX. The two week claims attached to some other Regenerist serums belong to those products, so do not use them as a countdown for this bottle.24

Which Regenerist serum do you have?

The Canadian MAX serum and Regenerating Serum are different products, even if the shared family name is doing its best to blur the distinction. Match the full name and country before borrowing another bottle's directions or results timeline.14

Choose MAX if you want a separate fragrance free peptide serum to use before moisturizer. The Canadian Regenerating Serum has its own two week wrinkle appearance claim. The UK Age Defy serum is another fragrance free option, with a stated 14 day wrinkle timeline. The UK cream and serum combines two product formats, which is one less identity for the bottle to manage. It contains fragrance, so it is not the equivalent choice if avoiding fragrance is your priority.1345

The UK products describe their niacinamide as 99% pure. That describes the purity of the ingredient, not a serum or cream made of 99% niacinamide. Do not use that number to compare the strength of the UK products with MAX. A fair price comparison also needs local prices for the other bottles; the US MAX price alone cannot rank the range by value.35

Is MAX a retinol serum?

The Canadian MAX ingredient list contains no retinol. Retinol is a form of vitamin A that increases skin cell turnover and collagen production; MAX's named focus is niacinamide and peptides. Retinol can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but visible wrinkle improvement usually takes several months. It can also cause dryness, redness, itching, burning and peeling. These are considerations for a separate retinol product, not a list of established MAX side effects.16

What about sensitive skin, pregnancy or prescriptions?

Olay lists US MAX for oily, normal and dry skin. Canadian MAX is made without fragrance, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil or synthetic dyes. Product specific pregnancy advice, prescription compatibility and instructions for managing a reaction are not stated for MAX. If those questions affect your choice, ask about the exact formula rather than the Regenerist range as a whole.12

If you are considering adding a retinoid, the vitamin A family that includes retinol and prescription treatments, different precautions apply. Retinoids should not be used during pregnancy. People with skin allergies, dryness or substantial redness and inflammation should discuss alternatives with a dermatologist. General retinoid guidance is to start with a low strength every other night, build up slowly and use moisturizer and daytime sun protection. Do not apply those starting instructions to MAX, whose directions are morning and night.7
