Where is the expiry date?
Differin Gel 0.1% directs you to the expiry date on the packaging, which is less glamorous than the product name but more useful for this question. Effaclar Adapalene Gel 0.1% puts the expiry date on the tube's crimp, the folded end opposite the cap, making folded metal part of the filing system, which is an ambitious job description for the end of a tube. These are US product directions; for another brand, strength or formulation, check that product's own packaging.13
What does the expiry date mean?
The expiry date marks the period during which the medicine is known to retain its strength, quality and purity when stored as directed. Manufacturers establish that period through stability testing. Proper storage is part of the answer, not an optional extra: medicine that has been stored incorrectly can degrade before its printed expiry date.2
Do not keep using expired adapalene because the gel looks unchanged or there is plenty left. Expired medicines can be less effective, and changes in their ingredients can make them unsafe. Replace an expired tube rather than applying more to compensate for possible loss of strength.14
Does opening the tube change the expiry date?
Use the printed expiry date, and follow any additional instructions on your exact product about use after opening. Do not substitute a guessed number of months for the packaging directions. If the date is missing or unreadable, or you are unsure how an opening instruction applies, ask your pharmacist before continuing to use the medicine.15
How should you store adapalene?
Keep adapalene in its original container, tightly closed. Store the medicine out of sight and reach of children.5
- Store US Differin Gel 0.1% and Effaclar Adapalene Gel 0.1% at 68 to 77°F, equivalent to 20 to 25°C.
- Protect both gels from freezing.
- Keep adapalene away from excess heat and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom.
- If your tube has been exposed to unsuitable storage conditions, ask a pharmacist what to do rather than relying only on an unexpired date.
What should you do with expired adapalene?
- 1Check the packaging for disposal instructions.
- 2Use a medicine take back program where available. Ask your pharmacy about local collection options and whether they accept your product.
- 3Do not flush adapalene down the toilet or pour it down the sink.
- 4If no take back program is available, mix the medicine with used coffee grounds or kitty litter, seal the mixture in a bag or container that will not leak, and put it in household trash.
- 5Remove or cover personal information on prescription packaging before discarding it.
Should you apply extra from the replacement tube?
No. Follow your prescription or package directions. Adapalene is usually applied once daily at bedtime, and a missed dose does not call for a double dose. Applying more or using it more often will not speed up results and can irritate your skin.35
