Why did the sting start now?
A new product is not required. Several mild irritants can add up, which turns a routine into a chemistry department the face did not request. Harsh soaps, over exfoliating or scrubbing, and irritating ingredients can wear down the outer layer of skin. Dry skin is easier to irritate, and heat, cold, low humidity, sunlight, or friction can add to the load. Contact dermatitis is a skin reaction triggered by contact with an irritant or allergen. Some ingredients, including retinol and glycolic acid, can irritate sensitive skin.1234
Timing can help explain the pattern, though it cannot identify the cause by itself. Irritant symptoms can appear straight away or within 48 hours. An allergic cosmetic rash often starts more than 12 hours after contact and peaks around 48 hours; it can bring redness, swelling, or intense itching. Irritation can also sting or burn without a visible rash.156
What should I stop using when my skin starts stinging?
Stop using the product that seems to trigger the sting. If you have just applied it, gently wash it off and do not use it again. Keep the rest of your routine simple while your skin settles: wash with warm rather than hot water, use a mild soap free cleanser, and moisturize. Leave out scrubbing and harsh products.24
If you have rosacea, stop using astringents and toners, and check products for menthol, camphor, or sodium lauryl sulfate. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without asking the prescriber whether it could be contributing to a rosacea flare.7
See a GP for persistent, recurring, or severe symptoms, if you cannot identify the trigger, or if symptoms are not responding to care. Seek prompt medical advice if the skin rapidly worsens, develops discharge, becomes increasingly painful, or you feel generally unwell.35
Why do products sting when my skin barrier is damaged?
Your skin barrier is its outer layer, which helps hold water in and keep irritants out. Harsh soaps or chemicals, over exfoliating, and scrubbing can damage it. Stinging when you apply skin care, dryness, scaling, itching, rough patches, or tenderness can be signs of barrier damage, but they can also overlap with other skin problems.2
If barrier irritation seems likely, wash gently with warm water, rinse cleanser off rather than massaging for a long time, and moisturize. Moisturizers with ceramides, fatty acids, and lipids contain components found naturally in the skin barrier. Repair takes time: it can take three or four months to start seeing the benefits of barrier care.2
Can skin become sensitive to products over time?
Yes. Irritation can build after repeated exposure without an allergy, and a cosmetic allergy can appear after years of using a product without problems. A familiar product can become the suspect years later. Rosacea can also make usual skin care products cause redness or irritation after years of uneventful use.16
Fragrance and preservatives are frequent causes of cosmetic allergy. Unscented is a label with a narrow job, not a promise that fragrance has left the building. Unscented products can contain fragrance used to mask other smells; if fragrance seems to be the trigger, look for fragrance free products. Plant based ingredients can also contain fragrance related ingredients.46
Before adding a new product, patch test it on a quarter sized spot on your inner arm or at your elbow, twice daily for seven to ten days. Use the normal amount and leave it on for the usual time; for a cleanser, keep it on for five minutes or follow the label. If red, itchy, or swollen skin develops, wash the product off and do not use it again. A dermatologist can help identify the cause if you cannot pinpoint the ingredient.4
